Dining Out at Non Solo Pasta

Bucks County-Town & Country Living Magazine

by Sue & Bob Gordon

For the uninitiated, the food world along the quit, relatively open stretch of West Trenton Avenue on  the outskirts of Morrisville becomes a bit of a foggy landscapes. That’s where you’ll find Non Solo Pasta; but only if you’re looking.

Nestled in a nondescript mini-strip mall of stores, Non Solo Pasta’s name rings true. The house –made pasta here is terrific. It’s true. But besides pasta, you’ll find a solid menu of Italian favorites bolstered with a sweeping roster of daily specials. And sticker shock is nonexistent.

The exterior of this fine little Italian restaurant belies the attractive trappings you find inside. The interior is tastefully laid out. The walls are festooned with dramatic and appealing black and white photos of Italy. White linen tablecloths dress up the tables, and the term”Casually Elegant” describes the vibe. The servers enhance the experience. They’re cheery as well as knowledgeable and helpful with menu selections.

There’s a good selection of specialty martinis and frozen drinks to choose from, as well as an impressive list of wines. Most are Italian, with a large selection of Californian as well as some New Zealand and Australian thrown in for good measure.

Of course, the wines prove ideal for tapping the depths of the expansive Italian-centric  menu. Besides Appetizers, Menu categories include Pastas, Traditional Dishes, Seafood, Chicken or Veal, Gnocchi, Wood-Fired Pizzas and Calzones. Daily supplements not only increase the menu size but also add a number of non-Italian choices.

For starters, the Caprese salad captures the gusto of the Isle of Capri. A huge plate of Anipasto Toscano partners fresh mozzarella with olives, prosciutto, roasted peppers, soppressata and sharp provolone; it’s served with bruschetta and a medley of cured veggies. Insalata Di Mar bathes of flotilla of fruits des mer: calamari, mussels, shrimp with celery in extra-virgin olive oil tinged with a just-right hit of lemon juice. Clams Casino, Fried Calamari and other dishes fill out the category. On a recent visit, I ordered a daily special-Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp; an utterly superb dish. Four mammoth shrimp lounged around a dollop of creamy smashed potatoes topped with large capers. Drippings from the pan-seared prosciutto oozed into a buttery herb and garlic sauce, giving it muscle and depth. Delicioso!

The Soup of the Day was the Italian standard, Pasta Fagioli. Non Solo Pasta’s rendition averts being over-salted, all-to-frequent gig among restaurants. The smooth creamy tomato base gets heft from an armada of white beans and finely diced vegetable for a hearty, tasty finish.

The restaurant’s house made pasta choices include Capellini, Penne, Linguine and Fettucine, which can be ordered with any sauce you prefer, including classic preparations like Bolognese, Carbonara, Puttanesca, Ortolana and Vodka Cream Sauce. But if you’re a Gnocchi a-la-Mamma if you dare: a decadent mélange of sweet sautéed shrimp, crisp broccoli and tender pillow of gnocchi in a super-rich pink cream sauce.

As the Non Solo Pasta moniker itself suggests there’s much more than pasta on the menu. A recent lamb special plated four separate chops, each three bones thick, along with mashed potatoes and rabe. Rarely have I seen such a generous portion of tender meat.

Not surprisingly, the menu includes traditional plates like Lasagna, Manicotti, Ravioli di Roberto, and Tortellini-again, house made and satisfying. If you are trolling for seafood, consider favorites lie Shrimp Scapi, or Grilled Salomon or Mussels sautéed with garlic. The sea-full soulful Linguini Montmare nets a bounty of scallops, jumbo shrimp, clams, mushrooms and peppers in spicy red or white sauce.

And we can’t forget the pizzas-a feast for two at a low price. These pies are earthy renditions that waft a winsome whiff of a wood –fired stove. For lunch, Monday through Saturday, Non Solo Pasta offers Paninis, Hoagies, Subs and Salads.

Our recommendation to Bucks County Foodies: add Non Solo Pasta, a wonderful, affordable surprise, to your 2010 menu of Italian must-try restaurants.

Il cibo era squisito! Delicious; been there around 10 times and it's always great. Carbonara as good as in Rome and the mozzarella, prosciutto, tomato appetizer, is to die for! It's not buffalo mozzarella, it's even better; it melts in your mouth! Hey Gerry - it's time for the veal osso bucco!

I've been to Non Solo Pasta many times, but the food was never better than this past Sunday evening. The owner/chef suggested the beef short ribs as an entree & I've never had a more delicious plate of food. The ribs were meltingly tender...long simmered with a delicious, earthy sauce. Every bite of the meal from appetizers to dessert was superb. Don't miss this wonderful place!

This restaurant does serve very good pizza, but I think of it more as a white-table-cloth restaurant with a large menu of really nice entrees. The steaks and chops are delicious. Service was very nice. Very easy to get to from New Jersey.

We love this restaurant, the food is always  great, and the chef (owner) comes around to see how everyone is doing. We've ordered everything from rack of lamb to seafood, and have always been pleased. We found the wait staff to be courteous, and attentive.
